The Pacific Fishery Management Council (Pacific Council) will convene a webinar meeting of its Groundfish Management Team (GMT) to discuss items on the Pacific Council’s September 2023 meeting agenda.  This meeting is open to the public and will be held on Friday, September 1, 2023, from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pacific Time or when business for the day is completed. This meeting is being conducted remotely with a web broadcast that provides the opportunity for remote public comment. In the event an outage occurs or technical issues arise that impact the experience of remote attendees, we will attempt to resolve them but ultimately we cannot guarantee that they will be resolved satisfactorily.

Purpose of the meeting

The primary purpose of the GMT meeting is to prepare for the Pacific Council’s September 2023 meeting.  The GMT will discuss items related to the advisory body’s particular management items and administrative matters on the Pacific Council’s agenda.  The GMT may also address other assignments as directed by the Pacific Council. No management actions will be decided by the GMT.  The GMT recommendations will be considered by the Pacific Council at their September Council meeting.

The Pacific Fishery Management Council’s (Pacific Council) Groundfish Subcommittee of the Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC) will hold two online meetings to review 2023 groundfish stock assessments. This is the second meeting and will be held Monday, August 28 and Tuesday, August 29, 2023 from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. (Pacific Daylight Time) or when business for the day has been completed. This meeting is being conducted remotely with a web broadcast that provides the opportunity for remote public comment. In the event an outage occurs or technical issues arise that impact the experience of remote attendees, we will attempt to resolve them but ultimately we cannot guarantee that they will be resolved satisfactorily.

Purpose of the meeting

During this meeting, the SSC’s Groundfish Subcommittee will review the following: assessments and stock assessment review reports for canary rockfish and petrale sole, a catch-only projection for widow rockfish, and a limited assessment update for sablefish.  Further, the SSC Groundfish Subcommittee will review a catch report for yelloweye rockfish to determine the adequacy of rebuilding progress. The SSC Groundfish Subcommittee will prepare their recommendations for the SSC and Pacific Council consideration at their meetings in September.  Assessment recommendations may include endorsing these new stock assessments for management use or requesting further analyses to be reviewed at the late September review panel.

The Pacific Fishery Management Council’s (Pacific Council) Highly Migratory Species Management Team (HMSMT) will hold an online meeting, which is open to the public. The meeting will be held Tuesday, August 8, 2023, and Wednesday, August 9, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Pacific Time or until business for the day is completed. This meeting is being conducted remotely with a web broadcast that provides the opportunity for remote public comment. Purpose of the meeting

The purpose of this online HMSMT meeting is to plan for a joint meeting with the Pacific Council’s HMS Advisory Subpanel concurrent with the September 2023 Pacific Council meeting. The Pacific Council directed its two HMS advisory bodies to meet jointly to develop a detailed proposal for a workshop involving stakeholders. The objective of such a workshop would be to consider the development of fisheries for swordfish and other economically important species caught in the California large-mesh gillnet (DGN) fishery. This discussion is in the context of the transition of the DGN fishery as mandated by the Drift Gillnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act.

This meeting will be held Thursday, July 27, 2023, from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time or until business for the day has been completed. This meeting is being conducted remotely with a web broadcast that provides the opportunity for remote public comment. In the event an outage occurs or technical issues arise that impact the experience of remote attendees, we will attempt to resolve them but ultimately we cannot guarantee that they will be resolved satisfactorily. 

Purpose of the meeting

The purpose of this online meeting is for the MPC to consider current offshore wind (OSW) energy issues and to provide information and advice to the Pacific Council for consideration at its September 2023 meeting. Meeting topics may include Fisheries Communications Plans for the five California OSW leases and anticipated draft Oregon Wind Energy Areas.  Other OSW or aquaculture topics may be considered, as appropriate.

Council Meeting Decision Summary Documents are highlights of significant decisions made at Council meetings. Fishery policy decisions made by the Council are formally transmitted to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) as recommendations and are not final until NMFS approval.  Results of agenda items that do not reach a level of highlight significance are typically not described in the Decision Summary Document.  For a more detailed account of Council meeting discussions, see the Council meeting record and transcripts.   

The Pacific Fishery Management Council (Pacific Council) will convene an online meeting of its Ad Hoc Equity and Environmental Justice Committee (EEJC) to elect a chair and make plans for its first working meeting.
